SWEET MAGNOLIAS
Updated: Sep 3
When you are looking for a comforting show where you instantly want to feel loved and happy, watch Sweet Magnolias. It is about friendships, romance, loyalty, an amazing community, and three best friends and their families living in a beautiful fictional southern town named Serenity.
You can instantly feel the southern charm when you hear their accents, their hospitality and love for community, and you can feel it in the way people show up for one another when something happens. The show feels warm and cozy, and the story lives with where it is placed.
At the center of that community are lifelong best friends Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen. Their lifelong friendship is special, and it shows that being real friends doesn’t mean always being on the same page. Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen are challenged by their marriage struggles, their children, and problems each of us can relate to.
Their friendship is part of what makes Sweet Magnolias so comforting to watch. Because we see that a real friendship, where they know about each other’s lives since childhood and support each other while also sharing their own thoughts, means so much.
Their kids grew up together and call their moms’ friends “aunt,” which makes it more special and makes us feel the love. Their lives are not perfect, their kids’ lives are not perfect, but they stick together and help each other in such a selfless way that makes me want this kind of friendship.
The story is not only about the Sweet Magnolias, it is about their children, the town, the community, teenage life, and changing family constellations, which makes the show feel alive and makes the viewer feel understood. Faith plays such a big part in their lives, and church is woven naturally into the parents’ and teens’ lives. The community turns to prayer and their beliefs during difficult moments, and those beliefs influence the energy of Sweet Magnolias a lot.
Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen have experienced marriage, heartbreak, parenthood, and major life changes. But it doesn’t prevent them from making mistakes; they make decisions they later have to reconsider. And their teenagers do many of the same things. And that is an important fact for our teens to notice: parents don’t know everything just because they are older and have more life experience.
We can talk with our teenagers about relationships and how different people can play different roles in each other’s lives.
In Serenity, faith isn’t separated from everyday life, it influences a lot of their decisions, and beliefs and values naturally pass to the teens. We can talk with our teens and ask them about their values and if they know where they are coming from and if they think that we have had a big impact on it.
Parents spend years teaching children to apologize, but teenagers are also watching whether we follow the same rule. Teens want to know how we react when we do something wrong, and we can teach them with our own actions. And this is what we can talk to our teens about, how they feel when they think that we have to apologize but we don’t or what makes an apology feel sincere to them.
What is amazing about watching Sweet Magnolias is that we see both perspectives. We see the parent perspective and the teen perspective of the same story, and we can talk with our teenagers about it and see how differently we see the same thing. This is not always possible while watching movies and shows, and it can be interesting for us as well to see how teenagers see the world and how they expect us to react to certain things. And it can be nice to see how similar some of the struggles are as well, and that we are all far from perfect.
